WINTER HARBOR – Allan L. Smallidge, 73, died Saturday, March 4, 2006, at an Ellsworth hospital. He was born Jan. 11, 1933, in Winter Harbor, the son of Sylvia Roberts. Allan was educated in Winter Harbor schools, graduating from Winter Harbor High School, Class of 1950 and received a master’s degree from the University of Maine. He was a high school teacher in the communities of Easton, Newport, Livermore Falls and Shrewsbury, Mass., retiring in 1986. Following his retirement to Winter Harbor, he became the town manager of Winter Harbor, a position he held until 1996. After his service as town manager, Allan remained active in town affairs and was a charter member of Channing Chapel Preservation Society. He was a longtime volunteer at the town’s annual Lobster Festival and was on the board of directors of the Mill Stream Heights Housing Complex. Allan was very involved in town history and was known as the town historian. He was a supporter of the Winter Harbor Historical Society and was on the town’s Revitalization Committee. Allan also was active in Winter Harbor High School Alumni Activities and the Winter Harbor Cemetery Association. He was very concerned with helping raise funds to restore and preserve Hammond Hall for the town of Winter Harbor. Allan was an author, his first book is titled “A Summering Place” and his second book is soon to be released. He is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous friends. Allan will be remembered by four friends to whom he was especially close, Johnny Banes, Neil and Katherine Heidinger, Bruce Mackay and Dick Tivnan. Graveside memorial services will be held at the Greenwood Cemetery, Winter Harbor in the springtime. Cremation arrangements are by Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Ellsworth.
