BENEDICTA and PORTLAND – Agnes L. Rivers, 91, died unexpectedly and peacefully Sunday, Nov. 26, 2006, at St. Joseph Manor Nursing Home, Portland. She was born Aug. 24, 1915, in Benedicta, the daughter of Benjamin and Cecelia (Brown) Rivers. She was a graduate of St. Benedict High School, a sodality member, a communicant of St. Benedict Catholic Church and prayed the rosary daily. Agnes will be remembered as a lifelong caretaker, doing what she determined was right, giving of her self to serve others while giving no thought to the burden or expecting a reward. She dedicated most of her adult life in Benedicta, to the care of her parents, followed by the care of her brother and a dependent sister. Residing in the assisted living wing at St. Joseph Manor for the past three years, she was a daily cheerful inspiration and uplifting friend to her new family, including the staff. Sunday, Nov. 26, is the feast day of Christ the King. It commemorates the invitation to service and sacrifice without earthly reward. She is survived by one brother, Ralph of Syracuse, N.Y.; three nieces, 16 nephews; a dear cousin, Margaret Brown Qualey of Benedicta and her daughters, Therese and Cathy of Portland. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by seven sisters, Eliza, Catherine, Monica Hurley, Beatrice Pierce, Elizabeth – Sr. Mary Dominica, RSM, and Mary, and Rita Mackey; and two brothers, Leo and George. Friends in the Benedicta area may call 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 1, at St. Benedict Catholic Church, where a celebration of life and Mass of Christian burial will be held 11 a.m. with Fr. Joel Cyr, celebrant. Interment will be at St. Benedict Cemetery. There are no prior calling hours in the Portland area. For residents of St. Joseph Manor Nursing Home and Deering Pavilion, a memorial Mass will be scheduled at St. Joseph Manor and announced.
