(1975 Photo) BARBARA E. DONCHECZ BANGOR – Barbara E. Donchecz, 92, wife of the late Frank D. Donchecz, died Oct. 2, 2003, at a local healthcare facility. She was born Oct. 24, 1910, in Bangor, the daughter of Robert and Jessica (McCallister) Elliott. Barbara graduated from Bangor High School in 1928, and attended Miss Gilman’s Business School in Bangor, whereupon she went to work for the Traveler’s Insurance Co., a job she held for many years. In the 1950s she was a receptionist at the Officer’s Club at Dow Air Force Base until the base closed in the mid-sixties. In the 1970’s Barbara was a travel agent at the Alden Head Travel Bureau and continued this position with Bangor Travel when the Head Travel Bureau was sold. As a travel agent she traveled extensively to many countries and retired from the workplace in 1985. She loved sports, particularly baseball, and was a die-hard Red Sox fan. As a young woman she was a fine figure skater and she also skated with a partner. Barbara was also an excellent cook and loved to bake. She is survived by two daughters, Ann Chaples of Bangor, Gretchen Donchecz of New York City, N.Y.; one son, David Donchecz and his wife, Susan, of Nassau Bay, Texas; two grandchildren, Jessica and her husband, James Graham, of Searsport, Eric Chaples and his wife, Amy, of Bangor. A service of remembrance will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with Rev. Adam Soderberg, pastor of East Orrington Congregational Church, officiating. Interment will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, Bangor.
