Red Cross urges blood donations

The Associated Press

CONCORD, N.H. — Hurricanes Ike and Gustav have drained blood supplies all over the country, causing the Red Cross to limit supplies even in New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont.

Susan Palmer, CEO for the agency’s Northern New England Region, says the region already is 1,000 units of blood below what it had anticipated this month.

She said patient needs still are being met, but some standing orders for blood have been limited.

Palmer says the Red Cross likes to have a three-to-five-day supply of blood in the region. Now, it’s less than three days for most blood types.

She urges residents to give blood.
