BANGOR, Maine — They’re calling it the “first” annual Bangor Car Show in hopes the event once again will become a tradition, but years ago the city used to hold a similar show that always drew a large crowd.

“I don’t know exactly how long it’s been, but we do know it’s been a very long time,” said Kerrie Tripp, executive director of the Greater Bangor Convention & Visitors Bureau.

The car show to be held Sunday, Sept. 7, at the Bangor Waterfront has been planned at the urging of bureau’s past president, Bob Bangs, and organizers already have exceeded their expectations, Tripp said.

As of late last week, nearly 100 vehicles of all types, shapes and sizes had preregistered, and more are expected to filter in over the next week.

“There’s still opportunity for people to drive up that day and participate,” Tripp said.

Participants have registered from all over Maine, and even a few from out-of-state. The owners will compete in a variety of classes, including antiques, muscle cars, 2 by 4 and 4 by 4 trucks, motorcycles, and even remote control cars.

The show is a participant-judged event, and trophies will be awarded at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Tripp said some pretty classy cars already have entered, including a 1953 Studebaker Commander two-door coupe, a 1964 Austin-Healey 3000, and a 1936 Chevy Master fire engine.

“It comes complete with its own dog,” she said.

The registration fee is $10. Vehicles can check in from 8 to 10 a.m.

“It’s jus t another great event in the area,” Tripp said.

Admission is free and there will be food vendors on-site. There also will be a 50-50 raffle, entertainment and door prizes.

For those who will be traveling to Bangor for the show, several area hotels also are offering special car show rates.
