BREWER, Maine — A portion of North Main Street was closed Monday after a single-car accident that occurred shortly after 12:30 p.m.

The southbound lane heading toward Brewer from Eddington was closed starting at Clewleyville Road until about 3:30 p.m. while Bangor Hydro-Electric Co. crews worked to remove a utility pole that snapped off during the accident. The northbound lane also was closed for a short period of time and cars were rerouted around Clewleyville and Day roads.

The name of the woman driving the vehicle wasn’t immediately released by police, but witnesses told officers that the woman, believed to be in her 60s, appeared to black out before veering off the road and striking the utility pole.

The pole snapped off at the base and also broke in a second place higher up. The driver was taken to a local hospital and a witness said she was complaining of arm pain. Both air bags deployed, but damage to the exterior of the midsize passenger car appeared to be minor.

Brewer police and fire and Maine State Police went to the accident.
