BREWER — A portion of North Main Street was closed Monday following a single-car accident that occurred shortly after 12:30 p.m.

The south bound lane heading toward Brewer from Eddington was closed starting at the Clewleyville Road until about 3:30 p.m. while Bangor-Hydro Electric Co. crews work to remove a utility pole that was snapped off during the accident. The northbound lane also was closed for a short period of time and cars were rerouted around the Clewleyville and Day roads.

The name of the woman driving the vehicle wasn’t immediately released by police, but witnesses told officers that the woman, believed to be in her 60s, appeared to black out before veering off the road and striking the utility pole.

The pole snapped off at the base and also broke in a second place higher up. The driver was taken to a local hospital and a witness said she was complaining of arm pain. Both airbags deployed, but damage to the exterior of the mid-size passenger car appeared to be minor.

Brewer police and fire and State Police responded to the accident.
