BELFAST, Maine -&nbspThe garden of Jeff Richards and Dr. Shelby Wilbourne Richards at 108 Congress St. will be the Friday, Aug. 1, stop on the Belfast Garden Club’ s annual “Open Garden Days.” The garden will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The couple moved to the city six years ago from the desert of Las Vegas where they were not gardeners, something visitors to their garden will find hard to believe. Richards tends an extensive shade garden along the side of the property. Hostas, ferns, rhododendrons and azaleas nestle under cedar trees. The area is landscaped with tons of rock that he hauled from area quarries. Wilbourne takes care of the vegetables and annuals. There are also hanging baskets and patio plantings.

The next garden tour will be on Friday, Aug. 8, when Diane Coller Wilson at 124 Congress St. opens her garden. All tours this year are on Fridays with seven more scheduled. The final tour is Sept. 19.

The garden club suggests a donation of $3. Funds raised benefit the club’ s Belfast Civic Beautification projects that include the new garden just created at the public restrooms near the wharf, the gardens at the library, Post Office Square, the police station, City Park and around the chapel at the cemetery.

For a list of all the gardens and directions, look for the Open Garden Days flier in local restaurants, nurseries, beds and breakfasts, the library and the visitor’ s center.

Brochures and maps to the gardens are available at Post Office Square inside the decorative birdhouse planted there, or visit the club’ s Web site at belfastgardenclub.org.
